Fritillaria Meleagris Snake's Head Fritillary Bulbs
Snake's Head Fritillary is one of the more distinctive spring bulbs, with nodding bell shaped flowers and chequered markings in purple and white. It has a natural wildflower look, making it a good choice for softer planting schemes rather than neat formal displays.
The flowers appear from April to May and grow to around 20cm tall, with slim grey green foliage. They work well planted in clumps through borders, grass, meadows and light woodland shade, where they can naturalise and return in future years.
Plant the bulbs from September to December in rich soil that does not dry out during summer. They prefer partial shade and look best when planted in groups, around 8cm deep and 8cm apart.
