Empathy Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi 60g is a concentrated granular product containing living mycorrhizal fungi, specially formulated to help plants establish quickly, thrive in challenging conditions, and develop a more efficient, extensive root system. Endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Rootgrow has been trusted by gardeners and horticulturalists across the UK to give new plants the best possible start.
Mycorrhizal fungi form a natural symbiotic relationship with plant roots, dramatically extending the root system's reach into the surrounding soil. This allows plants to access water and nutrients far beyond what their roots alone could find — a relationship that has benefitted plants for more than 500 million years. In return, the plant provides sugars that fuel the fungi, creating a self-sustaining network that continues to work for the lifetime of the plant.
Empathy Rootgrow contains a carefully selected mixture of UK-grown mycorrhizal fungi species, carried in a natural clay medium that promotes rapid colonisation of the root zone. Simply sprinkle the granules directly onto the roots or into the planting hole at the point of planting — the fungi will begin to colonise the roots within days, reducing transplant shock and helping plants settle in much more quickly. The 60g pack treats up to 12 planting holes.
What does Rootgrow actually do?
Rootgrow contains living mycorrhizal fungi that colonise plant roots and create an extended underground network. This network dramatically increases the root system's effective surface area, allowing plants to absorb far more water and nutrients than they could alone. The result is faster establishment, stronger growth, and greater resilience to drought and disease.
When and how do I apply Rootgrow?
Apply Rootgrow at the point of planting by sprinkling the granules directly onto the roots in the planting hole, ensuring good contact between the product and the roots before backfilling. It cannot be applied effectively once a plant is already established in the ground, as the fungi must make direct contact with the roots to colonise them.
Can I use Rootgrow on all plants?
Rootgrow works with the vast majority of garden plants — including trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, fruit and vegetables. However, it is not effective on plants that do not form mycorrhizal associations: these include heathers, rhododendrons, azaleas, brassicas (such as cabbage, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower), and carnivorous plants.
How long does Rootgrow remain active in the soil?
The mycorrhizal fungi in Rootgrow are living organisms. Once established on the roots, they will continue to grow and benefit the plant for its entire lifetime, as long as the plant survives and provides the sugars that fuel the fungi. There is no need to re-apply each season.
Will I still need to feed and water my plants if I use Rootgrow?
Rootgrow significantly improves a plant's ability to find its own water and nutrients, which typically reduces the need for supplementary feeding and watering once the plant is established. However, newly planted specimens will still benefit from regular watering during dry spells in the first season, especially in well-drained soils.
