Westland Hammer-In Vine Eyes (Pack of 6) are 7.5cm galvanised-steel vine eyes for fixing wire or netting into walls, fences and timber posts. They're hammered straight in to create secure fixing points for climbing-plant supports, training wires, fencing runs, and even lightweight clothes lines around the garden or outbuildings.

Each eye has a small loop that sits proud of the surface once fitted, so wire can be threaded through and tensioned without slipping. The pack of 6 is enough to fix a single run of wire at sensible spacings — around 1.5–2m apart for most plant supports — or several shorter runs in different spots around the garden.

Where to Use

Hammer-In Vine Eyes are a general-purpose garden and outdoor fixings product, useful wherever you need a strong, permanent anchor point for wire or netting. Typical uses include:

  • Climbing-plant support — fix training wires along a wall for clematis, roses, jasmine, wisteria, ivy or honeysuckle
  • Wire supports for espalier fruit trees against a wall or fence
  • Fixing pea and bean netting, or fruit netting, to fence posts and timber battens
  • Creating a low garden trellis-line for sweet peas and annual climbers
  • Light fencing and wire runs between posts
  • Outdoor clothes lines and washing lines between walls, posts or trees
  • Picnic-shade lines, festoon-light runs and other utility wire in the garden

How to Use

  • Plan the run: mark the wall or fence where the wire is to run. For plant supports, space vine eyes roughly 1.5–2m apart along the line; for heavier netting, closer (about 1m apart).
  • Pre-mark the spots: a pencil or chalk mark at each fixing point keeps the line straight and the eyes in line.
  • Hammer the eye in: place the point of the eye against the mark and tap it squarely with a hammer until the shoulder of the eye sits flush against the wall or post. Take care to keep the loop vertical so the wire will run true.
  • Repeat along the line: work along the planned run, fitting the remaining eyes. Use a string line or spirit level to keep the eyes at the same height.
  • Thread the wire: pass galvanised wire, garden wire or wire rope through each loop in turn, leaving a small amount of slack for tensioning.
  • Tighten and tie off: tension the wire at one end using a wire strainer or a strong knot, then secure the off-cut at the other end. Trim any excess.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Hammer-In and Screw-In Vine Eyes?
Hammer-In Vine Eyes are designed to be tapped straight into timber posts and fence panels using a hammer — the pointed shank drives in like a nail. Screw-In Vine Eyes have a thread and are turned into pre-drilled pilot holes in masonry or brick, where a hammer-in eye would split the surface or work loose. Use Hammer-In for timber and Screw-In for brick, stone and concrete.

Can Hammer-In Vine Eyes be used in brick or concrete walls?
They're not designed for solid masonry. The galvanised-steel shank will not bite into brick or concrete without a pilot hole, and hammering it in can crack the surface or bend the eye. For brick, stone or concrete walls, use Screw-In Vine Eyes with a pre-drilled wall plug, or a specialist masonry fixing.

How far apart should I space the vine eyes along a wire run?
For most climbing-plant supports, 1.5–2m apart is sufficient. For heavier crops such as runner beans, peas or grapevines, space them closer at around 1m apart to take the additional weight. For a clothes line, 2–3m apart is typical.

Will the galvanised finish rust over time?
The bright zinc plating (BZP) protects the steel from rust in normal outdoor conditions for many years. In coastal areas, or where the eyes are in contact with treated timber, the finish may weather faster and you may see surface oxidation after several seasons. This is cosmetic and does not affect the strength of the fixing.

What wire should I use with these vine eyes?
Galvanised garden wire is the standard choice for plant supports. For lighter work (sweet peas, annual climbers), 1.6mm or 2mm wire is plenty; for heavier crops (roses, wisteria, grapevines), use 2.5–3mm galvanised wire. For clothes lines, use purpose-made washing line or 3–4mm galvanised wire rope with a tensioner.

Are they strong enough to hold a mature climbing rose?
Yes — the galvanised-steel shank is strong enough to bear the weight of a mature climbing rose, wisteria or similar heavy climber when properly spaced and tensioned. The key is using a sufficient number of eyes (every 1.5m or so) and good-quality galvanised wire that can take the load without snapping.
