Westland Garden Lime makes soils less acidic, enabling plants to take up the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. When soil pH drops too low, essential nutrients become locked in the soil and unavailable to plants — even regular feeding has little effect. Garden Lime corrects soil pH, releasing those locked-in nutrients and restoring your soil's ability to support strong, productive plants.
Ideal for use on vegetable plots, borders, lawns, and any garden area where you suspect the soil has become too acidic. A valuable source of calcium, it also helps to break down heavy clay soils over time, improving structure and drainage. For best results, apply in autumn before frost to give the lime time to work through the soil over winter.
One handful of Garden Lime is approximately 35 grams. The ideal soil pH is between 6 and 7. Do not apply around ericaceous plants (rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, blueberries) or on ground intended for brassicas and other vegetables sensitive to lime. For normal soils, apply every seven years; highly acidic soils may need an annual application.
How do I know if my soil is too acidic?
Common signs include yellowing leaves, poor growth despite regular feeding, and struggling brassicas or vegetables. You can confirm with an inexpensive soil pH test kit. A reading below 6.0 indicates the soil would benefit from liming. Ideal soil pH for most plants is between 6.0 and 7.0.
When is the best time to apply garden lime?
Autumn is ideal — applying before the first frosts gives the lime time to work through the soil over winter, so it is ready for the growing season. However, Garden Lime can be applied at any time of year.
Can I use garden lime around all my plants?
No. Do not apply around ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and blueberries, which require acidic soil to thrive. Also avoid using on ground intended for acid-loving vegetables. For most other garden plants, shrubs, and lawns, garden lime is beneficial.
Can I apply garden lime at the same time as fertiliser?
It is best to apply lime and fertiliser separately. Applying them together can reduce the effectiveness of both. If you are planning to feed as well, apply the lime first and wait a few weeks before adding fertiliser.
How often do I need to apply garden lime?
For normal garden soils, once every seven years is sufficient to maintain a healthy pH. If your soil is highly acidic, an annual application may be needed until the pH is corrected, then every seven years thereafter.
