Smart Garden Propagator & Soil Thermometer is a compact soil probe thermometer for checking compost and soil temperature before sowing seeds or transplanting young plants. Knowing the soil temperature helps gardeners give seeds the best possible start — most vegetable and flower seeds germinate faster and more reliably when sown into soil that has warmed to the right temperature for the variety.
Insert the probe directly into compost, seed trays, or open garden soil to take a quick temperature reading. The clear, easy-to-read temperature scale runs along the side of the probe, and the green plastic top provides a comfortable grip for pushing the thermometer into soil and pulling it out again. Compact enough to slip into a pocket or propagator tray between uses.
Made by Smart Garden, this simple analogue soil thermometer is a practical addition to any grower's kit, particularly through the late winter and spring months when soil and compost temperatures dictate when to start sowing. Use it in propagators, seed trays, raised beds, allotment rows and greenhouse borders to monitor conditions throughout the growing season.
Why do I need a soil thermometer?
Most vegetable and flower seeds germinate fastest and most reliably when the soil is at the right temperature for the variety — typically between 10°C and 24°C. A soil thermometer takes the guesswork out of timing, helping you avoid sowing into cold compost where seeds are likely to rot or sit dormant.
How deep should I insert the soil thermometer?
Push the probe tip 5–10 cm into the compost or soil. In seed trays, insert to roughly the depth of the compost. In open garden soil, 5–10 cm gives a representative reading of the root zone temperature that germinating seeds will actually experience.
How long do I need to leave it in the soil?
Leave the thermometer in place for 30–60 seconds to allow the reading to stabilise. A cold glass probe takes a moment to match the surrounding soil temperature, so a quick dip won't give an accurate result.
Is this thermometer suitable for use in a heated propagator?
Yes. The Smart Garden Soil Thermometer is ideal for checking that a heated propagator is running at the right temperature for the seeds you've sown. Insert the probe into the propagator compost and check the scale after about a minute.
Does it need batteries?
No. This is an analogue thermometer with a clear scale — no batteries or power source required. Wipe the probe clean after use and store it somewhere dry.
